Texting Thumb Pain Rises with Larger Smartphones
Health experts use the term "texting thumb" to describe thumb stiffness, aching, and a clicking sensation that results from prolonged phone scrolling, texting and doom‑scrolling. The condition has become more common as modern smartphones grow larger and heavier, leading to overuse of the thumb joint and, in severe cases, risk of carpal tunnel or arthritis.
Dr. Maureen O’Shaughnessy of the University of Kentucky HealthCare Hand Center said, “Mobile devices are here to stay. So rather than saying ‘you can’t be on your device,’ we really just need to learn and think about ways to make the devices compatible with modern life.” She recommends regular breaks, switching hands, adjusting posture, using voice‑to‑text, stretching the thumb and wrist, and employing grip accessories or phone stands to lessen strain.
