Textron Aviation's Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 Completes First Flight

On July 29, 2026, Textron Aviation flew the first prototype of its next‑generation Cessna Citation CJ3 Gen3 from Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport. Test pilots Steve Helmer and Dave Welbrock conducted a nearly two‑hour flight that reached 41,000 feet and a top indicated airspeed of 278 knots, confirming handling and system performance. "From takeoff to landing, the aircraft demonstrated the handling qualities and system performance we expected," Helmer said.

The flight marks the start of the CJ3 Gen3 flight‑test campaign toward FAA certification. The jet retains the Garmin G3000 avionics suite and adds autothrottles and an Emergency Autoland system that can autonomously land the aircraft. Optional enhanced vision, extra cockpit legroom, swivel seats and upgraded cabin connectivity are also featured. Senior Vice President of Engineering and Programs Chris Hearne said the milestone validates months of preparation and pushes the entire next‑generation Citation light‑jet lineup—CJ4 Gen3 and M2 Gen3—into testing.
