TfW Ffeibr connects South Wales to major European data centre campus

TfW Ffeibr, a not-for-profit network operator owned by Transport for Wales and the Welsh Government, has successfully linked South Wales to one of Europe’s largest data centre campuses. The railway-based full fibre broadband and Ethernet network now provides a direct high-speed connection between Cloud Centres and Vantage Data Centres.

The infrastructure is being installed alongside the electrification of the South Wales Metro and Core Valley Lines. By utilizing existing railway assets, the project extends high-speed digital connectivity into the Valleys and other hard-to-reach areas, providing local businesses with access to cloud services, AI workloads, and other modern digital applications.

Guy Reiffer, Managing Director of ffeibr, stated that the initiative aims to put the Valleys on an equal digital footing with major cities, making the region an attractive base for data-driven businesses. Adam Price MS, Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy, noted that the project serves as a model for using existing assets to build future-ready infrastructure while keeping economic value within Wales.
