TGGENCO seeks additional coal to address critical supply shortage

The Telangana Power Generation Corporation (TGGENCO) has requested the Union Power Ministry to allocate an additional 5 million tonnes of coal from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). The corporation reported that current coal stocks at its thermal power stations are sufficient for only four days, significantly below the 26-day requirement prescribed by the Central Electricity Authority.

TGGENCO cited deficiencies in both the quantity and quality of coal supplied by the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL). While TGGENCO has a long-term linkage with SCCL for 28.87 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), linkage materialization was only 76% for FY 2025–26, and quality materialization against contracted grades was approximately 40%.

This shortfall has forced several units, including those at the Kothagudem Thermal Power Station (KTPS) Stage-VI & VII and the Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS), to operate at partial loads because they require higher-grade G9/G10 coal. The shortage comes as Telangana faces a surge in peak power demand, which has risen from 13,000 MW to between 17,000 and 18,000 MW due to industrial use, irrigation, and heatwaves.
