Thai airline employee's heroin arrest leads to tighter Thai airport security

Australian police arrested a 26‑year‑old Thai airline employee at Melbourne Airport on 29 June after baggage screening revealed more than one kilogram of heroin concealed in tote bags. The employee was charged with importing and possessing heroin, an offence carrying a maximum sentence of 25 years, and will appear in court in September. Thai Airways confirmed the detention, said it is cooperating with authorities and will take decisive action against any misconduct.

In response, Thailand’s Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced on 30 June that airport security checks would be strengthened across the country. He emphasized that existing procedures already include drug tests and that the incident prompted a review of measures such as the possible use of sniff‑dogs and advanced scanning technology. No flights to Australia were cancelled, and the minister stressed continued cooperation with foreign authorities.
