Thai airline flight attendant arrested in Australia for heroin smuggling

A 26‑year‑old flight attendant employed by Thai International Airlines was detained at Melbourne Airport on 25 June after Australian Federal Police and the Australian Border Force discovered more than 1 kg of heroin concealed in the lining of twelve tote bags. The woman has been charged with one count of importing a marketable quantity of a border‑controlled drug and one count of possessing a marketable quantity, each carrying a maximum penalty of 25 years' imprisonment.

Thai authorities have elevated the case to a special investigation, citing the operation as part of an organised, cross‑border drug network that used airline crew to transport heroin from the Lao border through Thailand to Australia. The Thai Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) is coordinating with Australian agencies, and additional Thai and Lao individuals linked to the logistics chain have been arrested.

Australian officials stressed that insiders such as airline staff will continue to be targeted to protect the community from organised drug trafficking.
