Thai Airways cargo suspension disrupts electronic component exports

Thai Airways (THAI) suspended import and export services at its Suvarnabhumi Airport cargo warehouse from October 1 to October 6 due to flooding that prevented staff from reporting to work. As the largest cargo handler in Thailand, managing approximately 50% to 55% of the nation's air cargo capacity, the suspension has significantly impacted exporters.

The disruption primarily affects high-value, lightweight electronic components such as semiconductors and hard disks, which are difficult to transition to sea freight. Major destinations for these goods include the United States, South Korea, and Taiwan. Thai officials have expressed concern that the delay could lead international clients to seek alternative suppliers, damaging the country's reputation for reliability.

Thai Airways announced it would resume all flights on October 3, mobilizing personnel from various departments to normalize operations. The airline has apologized for the disruption and is reviewing its management systems to prevent future occurrences. Meanwhile, the Thai government has instructed airport authorities to secure temporary storage for delayed cargo and has offered assistance to manage staffing shortages.
