Thai Airways dismisses CEO Chai Eamsiri amid operational crisis

The Thai Airways board has dismissed CEO Chai Eamsiri effective immediately following a major operational crisis at Suvarnabhumi Airport. The dismissal follows widespread criticism regarding flight delays and a massive baggage backlog, where over 10,000 pieces of luggage were left stranded due to manpower shortages caused by heavy flooding in Bangkok.

In addition to the service failures, the board has initiated an investigation into several management issues. These include the procurement of approximately 860,000 bottles of wine valued at over 800 million baht from a single supplier, as well as the airline's ground service subcontracting structure.

Samrit Samniang, a current board member and former executive at PTT Exploration and Production Plc, has been appointed as the full-time acting CEO. His immediate mandate is to stabilize operations, clear the baggage backlog, and restore passenger confidence. The dismissal comes months before Mr. Eamsiri's contract was originally set to expire in January 2027.
