Thai Airways faces operational crisis amid baggage and cargo disruptions
Thai Airways is facing significant operational challenges, including a crisis involving approximately 8,000 pieces of stranded passenger luggage at the airport. While airline management attributed the disruption to staff being unable to reach work due to major flooding in Bangkok, reports suggest the root cause may actually be a labor strike by outsourced ground handling staff. The dispute reportedly stems from dissatisfaction with compensation levels following aggressive price negotiations by the airline.
In addition to the baggage issues, Thai Airways announced an embargo on all inbound, outbound, and transit cargo at its Suvarnabhumi Airport warehouse from October 1 to October 6, 2026. The airline cited the same flooding issues as the reason for this suspension. These incidents occur amid broader industry pressures, including global economic instability, geopolitical conflicts affecting tourism, rising fuel costs, and intense market competition.
