Thai and Malaysian authorities report major crimes involving Chinese nationals

Thai immigration police arrested a Chinese national, Xin Zhang, in Pattaya for his alleged role in a massive cryptocurrency heist involving over 162 million baht in digital assets. Zhang reportedly utilized advanced artificial intelligence, specifically custom face-swapping software, to impersonate victims. This deepfake technology allowed the criminal group to deceive mobile operators into issuing replacement SIM cards, enabling them to intercept one-time passwords and gain control over cryptocurrency exchange accounts.

In a separate incident in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, five masked men armed with knives broke into a high-end apartment belonging to a Chinese businessman. The assailants tied up the owner's family, bodyguards, driver, and chef before fleeing with approximately 3.18 million ringgit in cash, jewelry, and luxury watches. The stolen items included high-value Patek Philippe and Richard Mille timepieces, as well as jade and platinum jewelry. Authorities are currently investigating both incidents as part of a broader concern regarding criminal activities involving foreign nationals in the region.
