Thai food exporters prepare for Indonesia's expanded halal rules

Thai food exporters are being urged to review their products and certification processes ahead of Indonesia's expanded halal requirements, set for implementation by October 17, 2026. The regulations follow Indonesia's Halal Product Assurance Law (Law No. 33/2014) and are managed by the Halal Product Assurance Organizing Agency (BPJPH).

Nantapong Chiralerspong, Director General of Thailand's Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), noted that the impact will vary based on product types and processing methods. While some products may qualify for exemptions via the Halal Positive List, processed items containing additives or specific ingredients generally require halal certification from Indonesia or a BPJPH-recognized foreign certification body.

Exemptions are reserved for products that are naturally halal, undergo no additional ingredient processing, and can prove a supply chain free from prohibited contamination. This includes caution for products like seasoned seafood, dried fruits with coatings, and certain frozen fruits. Indonesia remains a vital market for Thailand, with exports reaching approximately $9.3 billion in 2025, including $1.4 billion in agricultural and agro-industrial products.
