Thailand warns of SMS scams regarding unpaid traffic fines

The Thai government has issued a warning regarding fraudulent SMS messages claiming to involve unpaid traffic fines. Deputy Government Spokesperson Ploytalay Laksameesaengchan reported that the Royal Thai Police identified scams where messages are sent from unknown numbers, often using the prefix ‘RTP’ and mentioning ‘e-Tickets’.

These messages contain shortened links that direct users to sophisticated fake websites designed to mimic official police systems. Once on these sites, scammers display convincing details such as ticket numbers, vehicle registration, and fine amounts to build trust before requesting personal information and credit or debit card details for payment.

The Royal Thai Police emphasized that they do not have a policy of requesting fine payments via SMS containing links or QR codes. Citizens are urged not to click links, scan QR codes, or provide sensitive financial data in response to such messages.

To verify legitimate traffic fines, the government recommends using only official channels: the ‘Thang Rath’ application, the ‘Police Care’ application, or the Royal Thai Police’s official PTM e-Ticket website (ptm.police.go.th/eTicket).
