Thai national arrested in Kolkata for illegal stay since 2021

Kolkata Police detained a Thai woman at a spa on Sarat Bose Road after discovering she had been residing in India without valid documents. Her passport expired in 2025 and her tourist visa lapsed on 27 February 2021, yet she remained in the country for several years.

The arrest is part of a broader crackdown by West Bengal law‑enforcement agencies to identify and remove foreign nationals staying illegally. A special team has been created to inspect hotels, guest houses, spas and other accommodations, and central agencies have been notified. The woman will appear before the Foreigners Regional Registration Office in Kolkata and is being held at the Tollygunge Women’s Police Station. Following a change of state government, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered the formation of specialised units within the state and Kolkata police to combat illegal infiltration.
