Thai Nguyen state lottery company reports multi‑year financial deficit

The Thai Nguyen State Lottery Company (Công ty TNHH MTV Xổ số kiến thiết Thái Nguyên) has been flagged by provincial authorities as financially unsafe. Since 2018 the firm has recorded continuous losses, with deficits of VND 3.617 trillion in 2018, VND 1.219 trillion in 2022, VND 775 million in 2023, and a further VND 84 million loss in 2024 despite revenue of VND 36.906 trillion that year. Cumulative losses up to the end of 2024 total about VND 5.547 trillion.

Officials attribute the poor performance to a high rate of prize claims – in 2018 the company paid out over VND 33.671 trillion, roughly 60 % of ticket sales – as well as competition from private lottery provider Vietlott, limited advertising, a large number of inactive sales agents, and the impact of illegal gambling activities. The provincial report also notes similar financial safety concerns for other state‑owned enterprises in the region, such as the forestry companies in Bắc Kạn province.
