Thai Parliament to debate 400 billion baht energy emergency loan

The Thai government has scheduled a parliamentary session for August 26 to consider an emergency decree authorizing the Ministry of Finance to borrow 400 billion baht. The funds are intended to address energy crisis impacts and facilitate the country’s energy transition.

Koravee Prisnanantakul, Chairman of the Government Whip and a Bhumjaithai Party MP, announced that the opposition will be allocated eight hours for debate and scrutiny, while government MPs and ministers will have a combined three hours to respond. The session is expected to begin at 09:00, with a vote anticipated by 21:00.

The government whip plans to meet on August 24 to review the necessity of the loan and the specific plans for utilizing 200 billion baht of the funds for energy transition purposes. Officials expressed confidence that coalition members will vote in unison without internal dissent.
