Thai police investigate injured Russian woman fleeing Myanmar scam network
Thai police in Mae Sai are investigating the case of a 19-year-old Russian national, Mariia Tsygankova, who was found injured in a supermarket parking lot after fleeing from Myanmar.
Tsygankova reportedly traveled from Russia to China for work before moving to Yangon, Myanmar, following a job opportunity. She was subsequently taken to Tachileik, a border town directly opposite Mae Sai. Authorities suspect she may have been lured by a transnational scam network promising high wages. Investigators believe she may have been assaulted in Tachileik, possibly after refusing to follow instructions from a call center scam gang, and then brought across the border through an unofficial crossing.
Tsygankova was treated at Mae Sai Hospital for injuries to her arms and legs. She appeared frightened and requested assistance in contacting her mother and returning to Russia. Police are currently reviewing security footage to identify a pickup truck driver who reportedly assisted her in reaching the supermarket, and they plan to coordinate with the Russian Embassy.
