Thai police raid luxury Bangkok estates in 6 billion baht property crackdown
Thai authorities have conducted a massive crackdown on illegal foreign property ownership, targeting a network of companies using Thai nominees to hold luxury real estate. In a series of raids across four luxury housing estates in Bangkok, police arrested 11 foreigners, including 10 Chinese nationals and one American. The investigation identified 95 companies suspected of facilitating illegal ownership of 94 properties, with an estimated total value of 6 billion baht (approximately US$179 million).
The operation was prompted by intelligence from the Chinese embassy regarding several individuals wanted in China for serious crimes, including fraud and a 2018 murder case. Investigators found that some suspects used multiple passports to obscure their identities and were linked to organized crime and online scam operations.
In a separate but related development, police in Japan arrested six individuals suspected of laundering approximately 91 million yen ($580,000) in fraud proceeds through cryptocurrency. Meanwhile, in Vietnam, authorities dismantled a cross-border money laundering network that moved millions of dollars from Japan into digital assets like USDT and Ethereum to evade detection.
