Thai political scientist urges opposition to submit constitutional amendment drafts
Political scientist Asst. Prof. Dr. Chetta Subyen has urged opposition parties to expedite the submission of constitutional amendment drafts to Parliament. This follows a referendum held on February 8, 2026, where citizens expressed support in principle for drafting a new constitution.
Dr. Chetta noted that while the Bhumjaithai Party has already submitted a draft to the Speaker of the House, the opposition must also present its own proposals to ensure the public's will is translated into legislative action. He emphasized that the legislative branch must take responsibility for defining the processes, timelines, and frameworks for the new constitution rather than allowing the referendum results to remain stagnant.
Furthermore, he encouraged civil society networks to complete their submission processes. Dr. Chetta warned that delaying these actions risks the constitutional reform agenda being overshadowed by the political atmosphere surrounding upcoming elections, noting that the constitution serves as the long-term structural foundation for the country's power dynamics.
