Thai Senator criticizes 200 billion baht energy transition loan

Senator Nantana Nantawaropas has criticized a government emergency decree that would authorize the Ministry of Finance to borrow 200 billion baht to address energy crises and facilitate a national energy transition.

During a Senate session, Nantana argued that the plan to use massive loans to support solar rooftop tax incentives is superficial and may primarily benefit the wealthy rather than the poor. She questioned the government's heavy focus on solar energy, suggesting that alternative options like bioenergy, which aligns with the agricultural sector, should be considered instead.

Nantana raised three critical concerns regarding the solar initiative: the long-term stability and potential for solar panels to become toxic waste, Thailand's lack of domestic solar technology ownership, and the risk of capital flight. She cautioned that relying on imported technology could mirror the economic impact seen with Chinese electric vehicle subsidies and urged the government to use borrowed funds more effectively during the current economic crisis.
