Heat-Related Collapses Prompt Rescue at Austria’s Kaiserkrone Trail

On Saturday, extreme heat caused three participants to collapse during the Kaiserkrone Trail mountain race in Scheffau, Tirol. Two Dutch runners and one Austrian required mountain‑rescue assistance. One runner recorded a body temperature of 41.3 °C and was air‑lifted by helicopter to a hospital, where his condition stabilized. The other two athletes were rescued at different altitude points on the course after experiencing severe overheating and vomiting. The race start had been moved forward earlier in the day because of forecasted high temperatures.

Authorities emphasized the risks of extreme‑sport events during record heat and highlighted the rapid response of Tirol’s rescue services, including the use of helicopters and on‑site medical care.
