Thai Woman Loses €26,000 as Termites Devour Cash in Home Safe
A Thai woman kept about one million baht (roughly €26,000) in cash inside a home safe. When she opened the safe, she discovered that termites had infested it and eaten most of the paper banknotes, reducing many to dust.
The bank agreed to replace the partially damaged notes that could still be identified, but the bills completely consumed by the insects cannot be reimbursed. The incident underscores that safes protect against theft but not against pests such as termites, which feed on cellulose found in paper and cardboard.
