Australia and Thailand sign pacts to combat transnational crime

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul have signed two major agreements in Canberra to strengthen bilateral ties. The agreements focus on combating transnational crime and deepening economic engagement.

The joint statement on transnational crime targets the rising sophistication of online scams, cyber fraud, money laundering, drug trafficking, and human trafficking. Both leaders expressed concern over how criminal networks use emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies, to facilitate illicit activities. The cooperation will involve increased coordination between law enforcement, customs, immigration, and financial intelligence agencies to disrupt criminal supply chains and financial flows.

In addition to security cooperation, the leaders signed a statement to enhance economic engagement. During the official visit, Prime Minister Anutin led a delegation of 14 representatives from nine major Thai companies to meet with Prime Minister Albanese to discuss economic opportunities.
