Thailand and Sri Lanka to formalize labor agreements for 10,000 workers

Thailand and Sri Lanka are set to formalize a labor and employment partnership through bilateral agreements designed to address labor shortages in Thailand and provide structured employment opportunities for Sri Lankan nationals.

The Thai Cabinet has approved a framework that includes a Memorandum of Understanding on labor cooperation and a specific agreement for the employment of Sri Lankan citizens. The initiative aims to bring an initial group of 10,000 Sri Lankan workers into Thailand to support various industrial sectors. These workers will be offered two-year employment contracts that include rights and welfare protections.

The agreements establish a formal system to regulate recruitment, ensure fair wages, and define working conditions. By creating a legal pathway for employment, the framework seeks to combat human trafficking and illegal hiring practices. Both nations will share information regarding labor markets and local laws to maintain oversight from the initial recruitment stages through to final employment.
