Thailand Approves Fast‑Track Deportation Rules for Foreign Offenders

Thailand’s Cabinet approved a new draft regulation on 14 July 2026 that streamlines the removal of foreign nationals who break Thai laws or act against social norms. Deputy Prime Minister Pakorn Nilprapunt led the effort, citing the need to replace the outdated 1956 deportation law, which required deportees to return via their original entry route and forced airlines to bear the cost.

The new framework defines six categories of deportable offenses, including illegal entry or stay, work without a permit, illegal business activities, use of forged documents, crimes punishable by at least three years’ imprisonment, and participation as an accomplice. For serious criminal cases, deportation follows the completion of the judicial process and must occur within 30 days of sentence completion. Tourists who comply with immigration rules are not targeted. The regulation also shifts repatriation costs to the Thai government, aiming to reduce detention expenses and improve inter‑agency coordination as part of a broader 2026 immigration reform.

The measure is intended to speed up case handling, cut bureaucratic delays, and reinforce public order while aligning Thailand’s immigration enforcement with modern realities.
