Thailand bans competitive exams for kindergarten students

The Thai government has issued a directive to halt competitive examinations and ranking systems for kindergarten students. The Ministry of Education has instructed the Office of the Basic Education Commission and the Office of the Private Education Commission to ensure that both public and private schools nationwide strictly adhere to the Early Childhood Development Act, B.E. 2562.

Under this mandate, children under the age of six are prohibited from participating in win-loss academic competitions. The government aims to protect children from excessive pressure that could negatively impact brain development, stress levels, and emotional growth. Instead of traditional academic testing, schools are being directed to adopt developmental assessments. These new methods will focus on observing behaviors, communication skills, self-help abilities, and group participation, utilizing tools such as student portfolios to track individual progress.

To support this transition, the Ministry of Education is working on a new national education framework. This initiative involves collaboration with pediatricians and experts from the Department of Mental Health to ensure the curriculum promotes holistic development across physical, mental, emotional, social, and intellectual dimensions.
