Thailand becomes Malaysia's top rice supplier in H1 2026

Thailand has reclaimed its position as the largest rice supplier to Malaysia in the first half of 2026, surpassing both Vietnam and India. According to data from Padiberas Nasional Berhad (BERNAS), Malaysia imported a total of 710,656 tons of rice during this six-month period.

Thailand accounted for 327,995 tons, representing approximately 46% of Malaysia's total imports. This volume in just six months has already exceeded Thailand's total exports to Malaysia for the entire year of 2025. Vietnam ranked second with 232,416 tons, followed by India with 62,115 tons and Cambodia with 57,602 tons.

The surge is largely driven by high demand for Thai white rice, which is preferred by consumers in Peninsular Malaysia for its texture. Arada Fuangtong, Director General of the Thai Department of Foreign Trade, noted that this indicates a recovery in growth momentum within the Malaysian market. BERNAS cited Thailand's reliability, product quality, and stable supply as key factors in its selection of suppliers.
