Thailand builds border wall following clashes with Cambodia

The Thai military has constructed an eight-kilometer section of reinforced concrete wall, topped with barbed wire, along the border with Cambodia in Chanthaburi province. The 3.6-meter-high structure follows deadly clashes that occurred between the two nations last year.

Captain Prachya Hantiem of the Royal Thai Navy stated the wall is intended to prevent clandestine activities, specifically human trafficking and the smuggling of goods. While a ceasefire agreement was signed in late December, both Thailand and Cambodia have accused each other of failing to uphold the terms.

Local residents in nearby villages, who primarily cultivate corn, durian, and longan, report that the wall has encroached on some agricultural land. However, many locals expressed a preference for the increased security, noting that the barrier provides a sense of safety despite the ongoing uncertainty regarding the exact demarcation of the 800-kilometer border.
