Thailand collectors lose 5 million baht in Pokemon card scam
At least 25 victims in Thailand have filed complaints with the Economic Crime Suppression Division regarding a trading card game scam involving Pokemon cards. The total estimated losses exceed 5 million baht (approximately $152,000).
The suspect, identified as “Mr Mor,” allegedly built a reputation by initially delivering genuine rare cards from overseas to establish trust. Once collectors began placing much larger orders, the suspect reportedly used excuses such as customs delays and additional taxes to avoid delivery. He eventually cut off all contact and closed his Facebook business page.
Among the victims is an 11-year-old collector who reportedly lost over 1 million baht. Other victims include a 15-year-old trader and a 23-year-old collector who lost hundreds of thousands of baht. Authorities and consumer advocates are urging collectors to verify seller histories and the origins of high-value items before transferring large sums of money.
