Thailand cracks down on transnational citizenship fraud networks
The Thai government is intensifying efforts to crack down on transnational criminal networks involved in fraudulent citizenship and birth registration schemes. Government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek stated that authorities are working to protect national security and public interests by strictly enforcing laws against corruption.
The crackdown involves three major operations led by the Department of Provincial Administration, the Ministry of Interior, and the Royal Thai Police:
1. Operation ‘Thalay Kumarn Thip’: Resulted in the arrest of four suspects and the revocation of false birth registrations for two foreign children in the Huai Khwang district.
2. Operation ‘Yon Klet Mangkon’: Led to the arrest of six individuals, including two Chinese nationals, three Thai men hired to falsify marriage and child recognition documents, and one district official. This operation has since expanded to include 35 additional arrest warrants.
3. Operation ‘Thod Klet Mangkon’: Targeted networks using fraudulent marriage registrations to secure Thai nationality for foreign children. Between August 9 and 11, authorities arrested 32 individuals following 35 court-approved warrants. Due to the organized nature of these crimes and their impact on national security, courts have denied bail for 27 of the suspects.
