Thailand Deputy PM addresses flood concerns and approves water management projects
Deputy Prime Minister Songsak Thongsri, overseeing the National Water Resources Office (ONWR), has addressed social media reports regarding potential massive flooding, labeling some claims as fake news intended to cause public panic. While acknowledging heavy rainfall is expected in the North, Central, and Northeast regions between September 24 and 26, he assured the public that the government has sufficient measures in place to manage water levels, particularly in the Chao Phraya River, to prevent impact on Bangkok.
During a National Water Resources Committee meeting, officials approved the use of a central emergency budget for 99 projects aimed at addressing floods, droughts, and water quality issues nationwide. The government is also preparing flood management plans for Hat Yai and three southern border provinces.
To improve disaster response, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society is working to install more comprehensive water monitoring tools to increase data accuracy and early warning capabilities. Additionally, a 155 billion baht disaster insurance fund has been approved, effective October 1, 2026, with a goal of providing victim compensation within 45 days.
