Thailand Election Commission splits on Senate election fraud allegations
The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) has issued split decisions regarding allegations of rigging in the 2024 Senate elections. While the EC decided to prosecute 77 individuals in a separate case, it declined to file complaints with the Supreme Court against 21 high-profile figures, including Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul and party boss Newin Chidchob, concerning allegations of political interference.
EC Commissioner Sitthichot Intharawiset, representing a minority view, stated that evidence—including financial trails, phone records, and 12 lists of names used to coordinate votes—clearly links the fraud to major political parties. He noted that the majority of the commission voted to dismiss the charges against several Bhumjaithai officials, including a 5-to-2 decision regarding Anutin Charnvirakul.
The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) is now preparing to coordinate with prosecutors to expand its investigation. The DSI views the matter as a large-scale, organized criminal operation aimed at influencing legislative power and intends to analyze the full investigative files from the EC to pursue further legal action.
