Thailand enforces new checked‑baggage inspection rules for travelers

The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) announced that, starting 16 October, security staff may open checked luggage at public airports when X‑ray images or other indicators suggest the presence of prohibited, dangerous or explosive items. The opening can be done without the passenger present, must be recorded on video, and a “Notice of Baggage Inspection” is placed inside the bag after the check. Any suspicious or banned items are seized and will not be returned, with disposal or hand‑over to authorities as required.

The regulation also bars power‑bank devices from checked baggage. Passengers may carry power banks only in hand luggage, with a maximum of two units per person. Batteries up to 100 Wh are permitted under normal conditions; those between 100 Wh and 160 Wh need airline approval. Travelers are advised to use TSA‑approved locks; any damage caused by forced opening for inspection is not compensable by the airport.
