Thailand expands crackdown on transnational e-waste networks

The Thai government is expanding its crackdown on transnational e-waste trafficking, moving from individual container inspections to investigating entire criminal networks. Deputy Government Spokesperson Lalida Periswiwatana stated that authorities are now tracking the full supply chain, including foreign exporters, shipping documents, importers, waste destinations, and financial trails to identify the true perpetrators.

Following an inspection led by Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Suchart Chomklin at Laem Chabang Port, 18 agencies, including the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) and Customs Department, are collaborating to enforce environmental laws. In a recent inspection of 10 targeted containers, three from Poland, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand were found to be compliant. However, six containers from the United States, which were declared as aluminum scrap, were found to contain illegal electronic waste.

Authorities have flagged 825 containers for preliminary review. Officials emphasized that seizing containers for investigation does not automatically imply guilt, noting that 19 containers have already been identified with violations, while 14 others lack proper import records.
