Thailand expands regional airports to boost tourism

Thailand is expanding its regional airport infrastructure to boost tourism and investment, aiming to become a global aviation hub by 2029. The Department of Airports is implementing a strategy focused on infrastructure, flight safety, and regional development.

Key developments include:

- Udon Thani Airport: Domestic flights have increased by 50 percent, and the facility now features customs, immigration, and quarantine services for international connections, such as the route to Tokyo-Narita. - Hua Hin Airport: Upgrades are underway to establish international status, with plans to resume flights to Kuala Lumpur and prepare routes to Singapore, Taipei, and Shanghai. - Khon Kaen Airport: Efforts are being made to accelerate the installation of ILS/DME systems to support international flights and improve landings during poor weather. - Economic Incentives: To attract investment in maintenance, cargo, and hangars, commercial lease terms for airport products may be extended from three years to up to 30 years.

Additionally, Aerothai is modernizing air traffic control by deploying digital tower systems at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports, alongside remote-controlled towers in Narathiwat and Betong.
