Thailand explores U.S. cooperation for domestic drone production

The Thai Ministry of Defence is exploring potential cooperation with the United States regarding the production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A military delegation visited the U.S. from August 2 to 9, 2026, to review the Low-Cost Unmanned Combat Attack System (LUCAS) and discuss a roadmap for domestic drone manufacturing in Thailand.

Officials stated that the initiative aims to enhance Thailand’s defense-industrial capabilities, supporting needs such as maritime monitoring, border surveillance, and artillery observation. The discussions focused on the possibility of technology transfer, which could allow Thailand greater control over the maintenance, upgrades, and development of avionics, propulsion, and mission software.

Despite these discussions, the Ministry of Defence clarified that no binding agreements or official government approvals have been finalized. The project is currently in a study phase to evaluate costs, benefits, and the impact on Thailand’s strategic balance between the U.S. and China. The ministry emphasized that the goal is to ensure maximum benefit for the country through potential local manufacturing or final assembly of UAV kits.
