A sophisticated new wave of public scams is targeting individuals in Thailand, particularly in busy tourist areas like Bangkok. Unlike traditional tourist traps, these scams utilize psychological manipulation by exploiting a person's natural desire to be helpful.

Scammers often pose as friendly, well-dressed strangers who approach victims in public spaces, such as shopping malls or cafes. They request seemingly harmless favors, such as asking a traveler to inspect foreign currency or requesting that a victim scan a digital QR code because their phone battery has died. These interactions are designed to distract victims, allowing scammers to steal physical cash or sensitive digital data.

Authorities advise travelers to trust their instincts and avoid unsolicited requests for assistance. Key safety measures include never handing over physical cash for inspection and strictly avoiding the scanning of unknown QR codes.
