Thailand House approves 400 billion baht emergency loan for energy transition
The Thai House of Representatives has approved an emergency decree authorizing the Ministry of Finance to borrow up to 400 billion baht to address energy crises and facilitate a national energy transition. The vote passed with 285 in favor and 141 against.
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas stated the measure is essential for economic security, citing a nearly 600 billion baht current account deficit in the second quarter and rising inflation. The funds are intended to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and accelerate the shift toward clean energy, including solar power, electric vehicles (EV), and improved grid infrastructure.
Of the total amount, 200 billion baht is specifically earmarked for restructuring the energy sector. The government has established a 'Negative List' to ensure funds are not used for research consulting, overseas travel, or direct distribution of consumer goods. Additionally, the 'Thai Helps Thai Plus' project will be utilized to mitigate the cost-of-living crisis for citizens and small businesses through technology and AI support.
