Thailand GDP growth analysis clarifies IMF report comparisons

Data analyst Nat Mongkolnavin has addressed public concerns regarding IMF economic growth forecasts, which suggested Thailand's GDP growth rate is trailing behind neighbors like Laos and Cambodia.

Mongkolnavin explains that the perceived gap is largely due to the 'Base Effect.' Because Thailand has a much larger economy—approximately $500 billion—compared to Cambodia ($30–40 billion) and Laos ($15 billion), achieving high percentage growth requires significantly more absolute capital. In contrast, smaller economies can see rapid percentage increases through relatively modest infrastructure investments. Therefore, lower percentage growth does not necessarily indicate that Thailand's development or wealth has been overtaken by its neighbors.
