Thailand government clarifies flood evacuation advice regarding pets
Lalida Pheriswiwattana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, has clarified the government's stance regarding pet safety during flood evacuations. The clarification follows public debate sparked by suggestions from Assistant Professor Dr. Parinya Tevanarumitkul regarding pet care during disasters.
Lalida emphasized that the Prime Minister's intent was not to advise citizens to abandon their pets, but rather to urge people to evacuate before water levels rise to dangerous heights. She noted that waiting too long makes evacuation difficult and hazardous for both humans and animals, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and the sick.
The government is reportedly considering proposals to provide dedicated pet areas within evacuation centers that are separate from sleeping and cooking zones to maintain hygiene and safety. Residents in high-risk areas are encouraged to notify officials about the number of pets in their care to facilitate appropriate assistance via the 1784 emergency hotline.
