Thailand household debt reaches 16.41 trillion Baht
Thai household debt reached 16.41 trillion Baht by the end of the first quarter of 2026, according to the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC). While this represents 85.9 percent of the country's GDP—the lowest ratio since 2020 due to faster economic growth—financial experts warn that the situation remains precarious.
Non-performing private loans have accumulated to 1.25 trillion Baht. Analysts from Bangkok Bank suggest that the declining debt-to-GDP ratio may be misleading, as banks have become more restrictive in issuing small loans. This may force individuals toward high-interest alternatives such as pawnshops, cooperatives, or private moneylenders.
Data regarding individual household debt varies significantly by source. The National Statistical Office (NSO) reported an average monthly household income of 28,151 Baht for the first half of 2025, with 40.7 percent of households carrying debt. In contrast, a survey by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) involving 1,720 respondents suggested a much higher debt level, with 91.8 percent of participants reporting indebtedness.
