Thailand implements new airport baggage search regulations
The Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) has implemented new regulations regarding the inspection of checked luggage at airports. Under these rules, security officers are authorized to open suspicious baggage without the passenger being present or providing prior notification if X-ray screening identifies potential security threats, prohibited items, or suspicious objects.
The measure aims to strengthen aviation security and reduce flight delays caused by the need to locate passengers before inspecting their bags. CAAT emphasized that these searches are not indiscriminate and must be conducted only when there are reasonable grounds for inspection. All searches must occur in designated areas and be recorded to identify the personnel involved and the items discovered.
To ensure transparency, a ‘Notice of Baggage Inspection’ explaining the reason for the search must be placed inside the luggage. CAAT noted that these procedures align with international aviation security practices currently utilized in countries such as Singapore, Japan, South Korea, the United States, and various nations across Europe and the Middle East.
