Thailand implements new deportation rules for problematic tourists

Thailand has implemented new regulations allowing for the expedited deportation of foreign tourists and workers who violate national laws or engage in disrespectful behavior. The rules, published in the Royal Thai Government Gazette, target individuals involved in illegal work, fraudulent business exploitation, use of false documents, overstaying visas, or offenses punishable by at least five years in prison.

Tourism Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul stated that problematic foreigners who break the law must leave the country. The measures also aim to address behavior deemed a threat to public order, including aggressive or intimidating conduct and actions that violate Thai cultural values and public morality.

The crackdown follows several high-profile incidents involving public sexual misconduct, illegal motorcycle racing, and disputes regarding the treatment of specific nationalities. While Thailand remains economically dependent on tourism, which accounts for over 10 percent of its GDP, authorities seek to preserve cultural values and improve the quality of the tourism sector through stricter enforcement.
