Thailand insurgency: Coordinated attacks strike southern provinces

A coordinated wave of at least 78 incidents, including arson, bombings, and other attacks, occurred across four provinces in Thailand’s deep south last weekend. The violence targeted government buildings, businesses, convenience stores, vehicles, utility poles, and railway tracks, resulting in three injuries and disrupted train services.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which took place in predominantly Muslim and ethnic Malay provinces bordering Malaysia. This region has experienced a long-standing insurgency led by separatist movements that has resulted in more than 7,800 deaths since 2004. While the violence is largely confined to these rural areas and rarely affects the country’s major tourist destinations, the recent surge in activity has increased fear and mistrust among local residents even as the government attempts to revive peace talks.
