Thailand National Security Committee slams intelligence failures in southern border unrest

Thailand’s National Security Committee has criticized intelligence agencies for failing to prevent widespread unrest in the southern border provinces. During a special meeting, Montien Songpracha, a Bhumjaithai Party MP and committee member, noted that despite a budget of 520 billion baht spent over 22 years, insurgent activities have occurred at hundreds of locations.

The committee questioned how perpetrators were able to operate across hundreds of sites over a three-day period, involving groups of 7–8 people at single locations, without encountering significant resistance from security forces. There are concerns regarding how large, well-prepared groups managed to pass through checkpoints without clashes.

Additionally, authorities are investigating allegations that civilians were fired upon from a surveillance helicopter. The committee also highlighted a lack of integration between security agencies, noting that different departments report conflicting numbers regarding the incidents. Montien criticized the security apparatus for failing to consult local Members of Parliament, who possess intimate knowledge of the area, arguing that the excuse of lack of public cooperation is invalid if local representatives are not given a platform to provide information.
