Asia Era One faces potential blacklisting over rail contract dispute

The Thai government has issued a warning to the Asia Era One consortium, led by the CP Group, regarding its attempt to terminate major infrastructure contracts. The dispute involves the 220-billion-baht high-speed railway project connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao airports, as well as the current operation of the Bangkok Airport Rail Link.

Asia Era One is seeking to exit the high-speed rail agreement, primarily due to disagreements over the payment structure. The company is pushing for a progress-based payment model rather than the current arrangement where a lump sum is paid upon project completion. Officials have warned that abandoning such critical national infrastructure could lead to the consortium being blacklisted.

The Airport Rail Link operating agreement is set to expire on September 30, 2026. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has proposed that Asia Era One continue operations for one additional year to ensure stability. While the consortium has not yet accepted this proposal, it is expected to submit an operating plan by September 4, with further negotiations scheduled for September 7. Additionally, the SRT has indicated it will take over construction for overlapping sections of the rail line.
