Thailand Orange Line delays spark debate on transit expansion
Dr. Samart Rajaprasit, former Deputy Governor of Bangkok, has criticized the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) regarding significant delays to the Orange Line East project. Although civil works for the 22.5-kilometer stretch between Thailand Cultural Centre and Min Buri were completed in 2023, the line is not yet operational.
The MRTA now plans to begin trial services in December 2027, with official commercial operations scheduled for January 2028. This represents a four-year delay from the original March 2024 target. Dr. Samart noted that while the physical structures are ready, the project still lacks essential systems, rolling stock, and safety testing.
In a separate analysis, Dr. Samart also examined the progress of proposed mass transit projects in five other provinces: Chiang Mai, Phuket, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phitsanulok, and Hat Yai. The MRTA is currently reviewing these projects based on economic feasibility and the level of government subsidies required, with no specific start dates yet confirmed.
