Thailand orders citizenship system overhaul amid crime crackdowns

Thailand is implementing a sweeping review of its citizenship application process. Deputy Interior Ministers Polpheep Suwannachawi and Worashit Liangprasert ordered the overhaul to address loopholes used by foreign nationals through nominee arrangements.

In law enforcement developments, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) conducted ‘Operation Blacklist Hunt,’ resulting in the arrest of 16 suspects linked to a major narcotics network and outstanding warrants. Additionally, police in the Pattaya area arrested a 31-year-old Chinese national, identified as Mr. Yu, suspected of leading the PAOFENG network, which allegedly laundered nearly one billion baht for international online gambling operations.

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) has also summoned 10 witnesses regarding an investigation into an Israeli national, Maimon, concerning an alleged nominee network in Chonburi province.

Local crime reports include the assault and robbery of a Russian tourist in Pattaya by three men on a motorcycle, and an assault on a British man near Soi Jo.
