Thailand pauses 166 data center projects to establish new regulatory standards

Thailand's Data Center Policy Committee has issued a temporary moratorium on the construction and approval of over 166 data center projects. This includes 49 projects currently under construction and 117 projects in the application or review phase. The pause is intended to allow for the establishment of centralized national standards and criteria covering economic infrastructure, building space, and environmental impact, with a target completion framework within one month.

While the move may create short-term negative sentiment for the sector due to potential delays, analysts suggest the long-term impact is limited as it does not reflect a decline in demand. Instead, the regulation aims to organize the industry and favor operators with robust infrastructure. Major players such as GULF and BGRIM have confirmed that their existing and ongoing projects are not included in the 166 delayed projects.

Public discourse regarding data center expansion in Thailand has also shifted toward social concerns. Beyond the technological benefits of AI and cloud computing, social media discussions highlight growing questions regarding energy and water resource consumption, environmental impacts, community safety, and the tangible economic benefits for local society.
