Thailand plans 450 baht tourist fee and monitors regional travel trends

Thailand is considering the introduction of a 450 baht tourist fee for foreign visitors, expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027. The proposed flat rate would apply to all modes of entry, including air, land, and sea, a change from previous plans that suggested tiered pricing based on arrival method. The fee is intended to be linked to insurance, though specific terms and exemptions are still being finalized.

Recent tourism data shows varying trends across the country. While international visitor numbers saw a slight year-on-year decrease in the first half of 2024, specific markets like Japanese tourists experienced a weekly increase of over 13% during the Obon holiday period.

Despite these fluctuations, regional disparities remain significant. The Isaan region continues to see low international engagement, with foreign visitors accounting for only approximately 6.85% of total trips to the area in 2024. Most international travelers remain concentrated in traditional hubs such as Bangkok, northern temples, and coastal regions.
