Thailand promotes public transit for World Car Free Day

Thailand is observing World Car Free Day on September 22, with city officials in Bangkok and other urban areas urging residents to utilize public transportation to promote sustainable living and reduce pollution.

The push for alternative transit coincides with rising economic pressures, as retail diesel prices in Thailand have surpassed 40 baht per litre, impacting household budgets. To support the transition to greener travel, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has implemented several infrastructure improvements.

These initiatives include the installation of 300 new bus shelters across Bangkok, designed to provide shade, seating, and safety through improved lighting. These shelters also feature travel information, such as bus routes, maps, and destination finders. Officials are encouraging commuters to integrate rail networks like the BTS and MRT with local buses and boats to create more efficient travel loops.
